Hope For Recovery From Borderline Personality Disorder
In my work with clients who have Borderline Personality and Loved Ones with someone in their lives who has BPD, I am often asked if there is really hope for recovery. Those with BPD and Loved Ones both ask this of me often.
There is so much hope for recovery from BPD.
They will sight how there is so much contradictory information on the web and in books that they are so confused. Many know there is hope if they have BPD, many others with BPD, don't tend to believe there is hope or have been left feeling a lack of hope based on what a mental health professional has told them and/or how they may have perceived what they said.

However, there are still far too many mental health professionals, whether they know more about BPD or not, who continue to tell clients that they really don't believe in recovery. To that I would simply say, there is so much hope for recovery from BPD. And, many have recovered from BPD. I recovered in 1995 and I haven't looked back.
The stigma around BPD among those diagnosed with it, loved ones, and yes, way too many (but certainly not all) mental health professionals that people with BPD can't get better is a major issue still. BPD is the most stigmatized mental health concern.
I would encourage anyone who has been diagnosed with BPD to challenge thinking that may be based on feeling that recovery is hopeless. It is not! Despite what you may feel, I want to gently challenge you today to re-frame that negative core belief. Look for evidence that people like myself and others have recovered. Look for evidence of others who support that you can recover. Let that start to be what you focus your thoughts and beliefs on, even and especially, if you do not currently feel there is hope for your own recovery.
BPD recovery is real. It is a process. It varies in length and difficulty individually and based on each person's constellation of life experience and early childhood arrested emotional development. Recovery is hard work, but it is also some of the most rewarding work, a most rewarding process that you can embark on, invest in, and come to learn to trust the process of.
There is so much hope for recovery from Borderline Personality. I have been helping clients find their own recovery for 20 years now. I have not only evidence but proof people can and do recover from BPD.
I hope, if you have BPD, and have been feeling hopeless, you will re-evaluate that. Step out of "emotion mind" (Linehan) and into "reasonable mind" (Linehan) - in other words don't let your feelings dictate what you believe. Learn to also include rational intellectual thought from your intelligence (which in those with BPD is stronger and more reliable than there feeling) and realistically, even if you don't know how you will recover, who you need to work with, or what recovery means, you can re-frame the negative distorted core belief that if you have BPD you can't recover. That will be a huge step forward for you that will help you get on that road to recovery making new and healthier choices that will open more understanding in the reality and in your believing that you can recover from BPD.
